One might be tempted to say ‘only the French’, but that might just insult another fleuriste extraordinaire out there, somewhere in the universe, if there is such a thing, another one, but perhaps it can be said, because Monsieur Martin is most definitely one of a kind.

One could be forgiven if experiencing sensory overload and that’s just from looking at his portfolio, let alone the way one might felt have felt when in amongst his recent creation in London at the book launch of Beneath The Shadows The Soul Walks.

The twists and turns of vegetation utilised as the fabric of the most intense and interesting creations are the business of Jérémy Martin, the result of which is surprisingly emotional, as a roller coaster of reaction sweeps you up and gathers you in the highly conceptual and often challenging creations or should they be called installations?

Whether its a hairstyle created from grasses, a face of succulents poking from a hoody that invites your fingers to dive in and squeeze, Jérémy Martin is a man who creates concepts not ‘arrangements. So what makes such a mind create such images and where does this all come from? Recently The Pandorian was lucky enough to get the inside scoop on what makes this florist tick…

Do you dream in colour?

Absolutely, my dreams are very often in colour. I notice flowers everywhere. They rarely leave me.

How did you come to be a florist? Was this something you always wanted to do?

My mother always said that I wanted to be a florist when I was little. The florist trade gradually came to me but I’ve always had a place very close to nature. I grew up in the countryside and nature was my playground. When I was older, I directed my studies to biology. I also have BAC + 3) in plant biology. But, however much I enjoyed studying plant science, I felt something lacking: I needed to be creative. So I stopped studying and moved to Paris to learn my current job.

What was the most difficult creation you have made?

The hardest part of my job is not the creation in itself, but the journey that leads to creation. I work mainly with fresh flowers which are, unfortunately, ephemeral. So I do not have much room for error in order to get the result I want.

When you create, do you have a preconceived idea or is it something which develops organically and spontaneously?

I work instinctively. I create from plants, according to the seasons, colours, shapes and textures. It is nature that leads me.

Do you have a favourite flower to work with?

I have no preference for flowers because I like to be surprised… however the hydrangea is a flower that I greatly appreciate.

What or who influences you in your design?

Contemporary art helps me a lot in my work. I love its complexity. The fashion world is also very important to me. Alexander McQueen has greatly inspired me with his creative genius and innovation. And since I cannot live without flowers, I am inspired by all the different artistic ways they are utilised.

So some are born to grow and harvest and some are born to create. Jeremy Martin brings to us such wonderful creations that it only serves to look, wonder and admire. What comes from the depths of his soul not only twists in life our perceptions, but as fragile as the medium itself, fades to leave space for something new, something exciting, something else exquisitely beautiful.
